AUTOFOAM-ED

My FLX has been with me for a month now, and the external road and tyre noise is really bugging me and pumping up the volume of the stereo doesn't help at all. I have heard a lot of positive comments in forums about chassis foaming. So today I went to KL auto to give autofoam a try. The owner of KL auto, Desmond, was a nice guy...the first thing he asked was "want coffee or 100plus?". The whole process includes foaming the undercarriage, A-pillars and installation of soundproofing mats for the doors and trunk. The whole process took 4 hours. The results? The most obvious one was better handling...I could take a corner at high speed without any problem. The car feels more solid now, steering feels sharper and the car doesn't dip much upon braking. At 110km/h, external noise was reduced and at 120km/h, I don't feel like I need to pump up the volume of the stereo like what I used to do. Engine sounds quieter now and road noise is reduced, but its still there albeit at a more acceptable level. I feel more confident driving my car now! So here are some pictures of the foaming process...

  1. Hi Willy,

I've had my FLX (standard version) almost three months now. Started noticing how loud the engine sounds in the second month or so. I usually have my stereo on loud as well, so the engine noise was only noticeable as I turn the engine off.

Mind sharing how much this mod costs? :)

  2. It depends on what type of soundproofing you would like to do. For my car, I spent almost 2K for this including foaming the whole undercarriage and front pillars. Foaming is usually not necessary if your only concern is noise, cuz foaming is more to add stability and agility to the car, but it does provide some soundproofing properties as well. If your only concern is engine noise, i guess adding soundproofing material on the firewall (wall between the dashboard and engine) would suffice. If road noise is bothering you as well, then soundproof the doors and wheel arches as well. You can visit KL auto and consult desmond..he's a very nice guy, but KL auto is really full of poison *grins*...and I will go back for more :)Here's a vid of the guy in youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZpQvxtqhAA

  3. Hello Willy,
Does autofoam and soundproofing makes your car heavier than before? Does it affect on your fuel consumption?

  4. hi cat lover,

It doesn't. the foam is very light and the sp material is also light (much lighter than dynamat)

  5. There were reports elsewhere that foaming traps moisture which leads to rusting in places difficult to repair. Any comments?
